A Calm Voice and a Helping Hand: Spotlight on Nurse Shay Elgiar

In the fast-paced environment of a school day, the health office is often a place of whirlwind activity. It takes a special kind of person to navigate a medical emergency one moment and share a quiet, joyful connection with a non-verbal student the next. At Weber School District, we are lucky to have exactly that person in Shalene “Shay” Elgiar.

As a dedicated school nurse serving over 3,600 students across Silver Ridge Elementary, Farr West Elementary, and Fremont High School, Shay’s impact is as broad as it is deep.

A "Safe Place" for Every Student

While her technical skills are top-tier, it is Shay’s emotional intelligence that truly sets her apart. She has become a "safe place" for our medically fragile and life skills students. Her colleagues note her incredible ability to communicate with non-speaking students, using a calming presence and genuine kindness to ensure every child feels seen, safe, and cared for.

"Shay manages a heavy workload with a constant smile," says one coworker. "She doesn't just treat symptoms; she treats the whole child. Her presence puts both students and staff at ease immediately."

Managing the Scale of Success

Managing the health needs of three different school communities is no small feat. From routine check-ups and medication management to emergency response and staff support, Shay’s "above and beyond" effort is a daily occurrence.

What makes a WSD Healthcare Hero?

  • Versatility: Seamlessly transitioning between elementary and high school environments.

  • Compassion: Building trust with students who have complex communication needs.

  • Dedication: Supporting the faculty and staff just as much as the students.

Thank You, Nurse Shay!

We are incredibly proud to have Shay on our team. Her work ensures that our schools remain safe, kind, and compassionate places where students can focus on what matters most: learning and growing.
